TIME IS OVER?
It has been
fascinating to learn about the Monochronic and Polychronic way of managing the
time.
If the Americans, especially the North
Americans are monochronic; In that case, no wonder their famous saying,
"Time is money" means that despite putting apart the family, business
people would fulfill their duties according to the already set up schedule.
On the other hand, most countries are
supposed to be polychronic, especially the South's Americans, or the Latins in
general. There is also a saying, "get fun today because you will die
tomorrow."
In this manner, their idiosyncrasy
makes them procrastinate things to do, or change appointments for another,
without having respect if, in this shift of schedule, they could hurt or make
somebody loses their precious monocratic time.
Even though Latin people are a little
less responsible with their compromises, it is worthwhile that they would
always be aside their family and friends. However, it somehow turns to be a bad
example for children, young or even adults, because they are giving the message
"I can do it later."
If we talk about the higher status in
those countries, let's say, the politics of the society, this polychronic way
of using time, might motivate corruption and the delay to make the country
develop in patterns of giving hope and a wise future for the people.
As parents of these countries, sometimes
we have to stand teachers that didn't get to class so the Ss. or were alone,
doing nothing, or if there was a supervisor, they lose the program plan;
therefore, they won't complete the whole curricula of the year.
Of course, we have to be sensitive and
think that they are human also, and sometimes they even have issues that need
them in other parts. But the problem is that this kind of situation makes Ss.
Please do the same thing, and skip classes, procrastinate homework, or even
more, they do not do it.
I think as teachers, we have to be
responsible. The thing that the time isn't Money like for a businessman but is
the savings in our life account bank, and it is our precious gold that we have
to take care of and use it wisely, so our Ss. would learn the value of time,
and that time runs away every second.
Now, my question is: How monochronic
should schools and teachers be. Would the idea of undoubtedly sticking to a
plan, to a schedule, might turn to be cold school, cold teachers, almost as
robots, to accomplish their tasks on time whether anything else could happen?
